Innovative Developmental Writing Programs

Accelerated Learning Program (ALP)– From the Community College of Baltimore County, this program uses a co-requisite model where developmental students co-enroll in college-level writing and developmental-level writing in the same semester.

Chabot College Integrated Reading and Writing Classes– As part of the California Acceleration Program, Chabot integrated developmental reading and writing into a single, dynamic course. This program was the inspiration for the single-text approach featured on Developing Writers and has been collecting promising data on the effectiveness of such an approach for over ten years.

Professional Organizations

Council on Basic Writing– This organization consists of basic writing instructors nationwide and meets annually at CCCC. They also have an active and collaborative Facebook group.

Council on Basic Writing Resource Share– This site includes links to assignments, syllabi, classroom management strategies, and teaching reflections.

Community College Research Center– The CCRC is housed at Columbia University and conducts research relevant to community college success.

National Association for Developmental Education– NADE is an organization dedicated to developmental education across the disciplines and hosts an annual conference for developmental educators.

National Council for Teachers of English– NCTE hosts both regional and national conferences and publishes multiple resources for teachers of English.

Two-Year College English Association– As part of NCTE, the TYCA works specifically on two-year college English research.
